In the spotlight: interpreting
The refugee crisis has shown that even in this day and age, it is not straightforward to talk to people that do not speak your language. Even with multiple apps and mobile marvels, certain situations cannot be resolved and require specialist support. Interpreters are trained for exactly these kinds of situations: They translate spoken language quickly and accurately from one language into another. However, as people often know little about interpreting and its various forms, we have chosen to devote an entire edition of Package Insert to verbal translation into foreign languages in order to give you an understanding of this sector. You will be surprised by some of the special features on offer in this specialist sector!

For example, have you heard of chuchotage? Or are you aware of the exact procedure for simultaneous interpreting? And why is it that two simultaneous interpreters have to squeeze themselves into an interpreting booth? These are all questions that will be answered in this edition.
At mt-g, interpreters work alongside trained translators as project managers, who previously worked as interpreters. In an interview with two colleagues, we ask them about their training as well as their personal experience in this specialist industry – both as project managers and as interpreters.

So where does interpreting actually come from? Who acted as an intermediary in the past when two people with different languages dealt with one another? In our article about the history of interpreting, we address the question of where interpreting originated and the direction in which it is currently moving. Join us for a small journey through the history of interpreting and find out what the present has in store for us – there are sure to be a few surprises along the way.

As always, we hope you enjoy reading this article and others in the 39th edition of Package Insert.
